DURBIN STATEMENT ON THE NOMINATION OF HARRIET MIERS TO THE U.S. SUPREME COURT
[WASHINGTON, DC] – U.S. Senator Dick Durbin (D-IL) today made the following statement regarding President Bush’s nomination of Harriet Miers to the U.S. Supreme Court:
“Harriet Miers has had an impressive career as an attorney. She has helped break new ground for women attorneys in Texas.”
“The Senate will now begin to see if she is worthy of filling Sandra Day O'Connor's seat on the Supreme Court.”
“Because Ms. Miers has not taken public positions on many important legal and constitutional issues, the Senate confirmation hearings will be particularly important.”
Senator Durbin is the Assistant Democratic Leader and has served on the Senate Judiciary Committee for 7 years. The Judiciary Committee is comprised of 10 Republicans and 8 Democrats.
