Stephen R. Wigginton, a Belleville lawyer and Democrat, was confirmed by the Senate Thursday to serve as U.S. attorney for the Southern District of Illinois, Sen. Dick Durbin, D-Ill., announced.

"Throughout his years as a lawyer in Southern Illinois, Stephen Wigginton has shown integrity and independence that I am sure he will bring to the position of U.S. Attorney," said Durbin. "It was an honor recommending his name to President Obama and voting on his nomination today."
Obama nominated Wigginton for the post in April.

Wigginton, of Troy, has been a partner at the law firm of Weilmuenster & Wigginton in Belleville since 2000 and has served as a part-time felony prosecutor for the Madison County state's attorney's office since 1999.

He also has worked as a litigator at law firms in Belleville and St. Louis and as a criminal prosecutor in the circuit attorney's office in St. Louis, and is active with the Illinois State Bar Association and Illinois Trial Lawyers Association.

A. Courtney Cox, the current U.S. attorney for the Southern District of Illinois and a Republican, was appointed to the position in 2007, and had expressed interest in keeping the role of top federal prosecutor for the 38 counties in Southern Illinois.
