U.S. Senator Dick Durbin (D-IL) held a news conference to discuss the American Opportunity Tax Credit, which allows families to receive a tax credit of up to $2,500 per student on their 2009 and 2010 tax returns. Only 38 percent of eligible families in Illinois claimed the tuition tax credit last year. The tax credit was recently extended for two years.
