Durbin Announces $67 Million in HUD Funding for Illinois Housing and Community Development

[WASHINGTON, D.C.] – U.S. Senator Dick Durbin (D-IL) today announced that communities in Illinois will receive a total of $67,050,654 in grant funding through four programs administered by Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) to help develop urban communities.

 

“This federal investment will give local development agencies across Illinois the ability to offer affordable housing and homeless assistance to the people in their community who need it most,” said Durbin.  

 

Community Development Block Grants

The Community Development Block Grants (CDBG) program provides annual grants to state and local governments to develop viable urban communities by providing decent housing and a suitable living environment, and by expanding economic opportunities, principally for low and moderate income persons. CDBG funding is an important tool for helping local governments to tackle serious challenges facing their communities. Under this announcement, the following communities will receive CDBG funding:

  • The State of Illinois will receive $26,188,994 in funding;
  • Berwyn, Illinois will receive $1,205,473 in funding;
  • Cook County, Illinois: will receive $9,592,913 in funding;
  • Des Plaines, Illinois will receive $276,523 in funding;
  • Elgin, Illinois will receive $798,926 in funding;
  • Hoffman Estates, Illinois will receive $246,395 in funding;
  • Mount Prospect, Illinois will receive $256,919 in funding;
  • Oak Park, Illinois will receive $1,505,367 in funding;
  • Palatine, Illinois will receive $371,311 in funding;
  • Schaumburg, Illinois will receive $299,949 in funding;
  • Will County, Illinois will receive $1,894,405 in funding; and
  • Kane County, Illinois will receive $1,132,178 in funding.

HOME Program

The HOME program helps to expand the supply of decent, affordable housing to low- and very low-income families by providing grants to fund housing programs that meet local needs and priorities. HOME is the largest Federal block grant to state and local governments designed exclusively to create affordable housing for low-income households. Under this announcement, the following communities will receive HOME program funding:

  • The State of Illinois will receive $11,156,773 in funding;
  • Cook County, Illinois will receive $4,171,139 in funding;
  • Kane County, Illinois will receive $577,869 in funding; and
  • Will County, Illinois will receive $396,646 in funding.

 

Emergency Shelter Grants

The Emergency Shelter Grants (ESG) program provides annual grants to state, local and private entities to improve the quality and number of emergency homeless shelters. Emergency Shelter Grants are available for the rehabilitation, operation and maintenance of emergency shelters, essential supportive services, and homeless prevention. Under this announcement, the following communities will receive ESG program funding:

 

  • The State of Illinois will receive $4,711,779 in funding;
  • Cook County, Illinois will receive $819,584 in funding;
  • Oak Park, Illinois will receive $137,514 in funding; and
  • Will County, Illinois will receive $137,784 in funding.

 

Housing Opportunities for People with AIDS (HOPWA)

 

The HOPWA program provides housing assistance and related supportive services to local units of government, states and non-profit organizations for projects that benefit low-income persons medically diagnosed with HIV/AIDS and their families. Under this announcement, the State of Illinois will receive $1,172,213 in funding.
