Durbin Announces More Than $5 Million in DOJ Funding to Enhance Community and Law Enforcement Safety
[WASHINGTON, D.C.] – U.S. Senator Dick Durbin (D-IL) today announced that the U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) has recently awarded a total of $5,118,812 in Edward Byrne Memorial Justice Assistance Grants to support Illinois law enforcement officers.
The Edward Byrne Memorial Justice Assistance Grant, named in memorial of a young police officer who was killed while on duty, is administered by The Department of Justice’s Bureau of Justice Assistance (BJA). The grants are awarded to states and units of local government to support a broad range of activities to prevent and control crime and to improve the justice system.
The following Illinois government offices and programs will receive funding:
- Aurora, Illinois: $110,512 in funding to increase essential law enforcement and prosecutorial services in the City of Aurora through the purchase and installation of law enforcement equipment and the support of a county prosecutor’s position;
- Bloomington, Illinois: $63,007 in funding to increase essential law enforcement services and enhance customer service through the purchase and installation of law enforcement equipment and the support of ethics training for officers in the City of Bloomington;
- Bolingbrook, Illinois: $12,907 in funding to support local law enforcement activities in Bolingbrook Village through the purchase law enforcement equipment and training;
- Carbondale, Illinois: $16,802 in funding to increase essential law enforcement services and improve officer safety in the City of Carbondale through the purchase and installation of law enforcement equipment;
- Champaign, Illinois: $94,894 in funding to increase essential law enforcement services and provide for a safer community through the purchase and installation of law enforcement equipment and the support of youth programming in the City of Champaign;
- Chicago, Illinois: $4,102,443 in funding to strengthen and increase local capacity for law enforcement and criminal justice prevention and intervention programs through the purchase and installation of law enforcement equipment, the purchase of police cruisers, the support of substance abuse treatment programs and the expansion of community policing programs in the Chicago Police Department;
- Danville, Illinois: $37,766 in funding to provide for safer community and increase officer presence by supporting overtime for personnel to conduct supplemental sweep patrols throughout the City of Danville and surrounding areas;
- Decatur, Illinois: $67,170 in funding to increase essential law enforcement services and provide for a safer community through increased officer presence through the purchase and installation of law enforcement equipment, offering overtime to officers and providing community policing in the City of Decatur;
- Edwardsville, Illinois: $13,671 in funding to increase essential law enforcement services in Madison County through the purchase of a LifeScan system;
- Galesburg, Illinois: $15,007 in funding to increase essential services for law enforcement in Knox County through the purchase of digital crime scene mapping equipment;
- Joliet, Illinois: $80,650 in funding to increase essential law enforcement services through the purchase and installation of law enforcement equipment in the City of Joliet;
- Kankakee, Illinois: $24,859 in funding to increase essential law enforcement services through the purchase of laptops for patrol vehicles and the support of a purchase of a first responder’s paging and alert system for the public in the City of Kankakee;
- Marion, Illinois: $11,800 in funding to enhance officer safety and improve agency accountability in the City of Marion through the purchase of technology equipment;
- Naperville, Illinois: $11,914 in funding to enhance essential services for officers in the City of Naperville through the purchase of computer server equipment in support of criminal investigation and evidence processing of electronic data devices such as smartphones and computers;
- Peoria, Illinois: $118,416 in funding to increase essential law enforcement services through the purchase and installation of law enforcement equipment and police vehicles in the City of Peoria;
- Quincy, Illinois: $20,735 in funding to increase essential law enforcement services through the purchase and installation of law enforcement equipment in the City of Quincy;
- Rockford, Illinois: $255,200 in funding to increase essential law enforcement services and improve customer service through the purchase and installation of law enforcement equipment and the support of training on community policing leadership and systems improvements in the City of Rockford;
- Sycamore, Illinois: $14,625 in funding to support local law enforcement activities in DeKalb County; and
- Waukegan, Illinois: $46,434 in funding to increase essential law enforcement services in the City of Waukegan through the purchase and installation of law enforcement equipment and a police cruiser.
