Durbin Announces Over $26.4 Million Investment in Illinois Communities and Housing Agencies

Cook County to receive $15.3 million for community development, shelter housing and affordable housing programs

[WASHINGTON, D.C.] – Assistant Senate Majority Leader Dick Durbin (D-IL) announced today that Illinois communities and housing agencies will receive $26,425,768 in grant funding from the Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD).  The grants provide local units of government with funding for community development, shelter housing and the expansion of affordable housing programs. 

 

Under this announcement, the following communities will receive funding:

 

Community Development Block Grants (CDBG)

The CDBG program provides annual grants to state and local governments to develop viable urban communities by providing decent housing and a suitable living environment and by expanding economic opportunities, primarily for low-income and moderate-income individuals and families.  CDBG funding is an important tool used to help local governments tackle serious challenges facing their communities. The following communities will receive CDBG funding:

 

  • Berwyn: $1,257,821
  • Bolingbrook: $285,578
  • Cicero: $1,327,933
  • Cook County:  $9,405,820
  • Des Plaines: $299,769
  • Elgin: $769,123
  • Hoffman Estates:  $272,165
  • Kane County:  $1,078,979
  • Palatine Village: $368,375
  • St. Clair County: $1,982,937
  • Will County: $1,328,665

 

HOME

The HOME program helps to expand the supply of decent, affordable housing to low-income and very low-income families by providing grants to state and local governments to fund housing programs that meet local needs and priorities.  HOME is the largest Federal block grant to State and local governments designed exclusively to create affordable housing for low-income households.  Each year the HOME program allocates approximately $2 billion among the States and hundreds of localities nationwide.  The following communities will receive HOME program funding:

 

  • Cook County:  $5,523,940
  • Kane County:  $718,085
  • St. Clair County:  $922,350
  • Will County: $452,113

  

Emergency Shelter Grants (ESG)

The ESG program provides homeless persons with basic shelter and essential supportive services.  Funds are available for the rehabilitation or remodeling of a building used as a new shelter, operations and maintenance of the facility, homeless prevention, grant administration, and essential supportive services such as case management, physical and mental health treatment, substance abuse counseling and childcare.  The following communities will receive ESG funding:

 

  • Cook County:  $432,115
