Durbin Applauds Senate Passage of the National Security Supplemental

WASHINGTON – U.S. Senate Majority Whip Dick Durbin (D-IL), Co-Chair of the Senate Ukraine Caucus, released the following statement on Senate passage of the national security supplemental, which provides aid for Ukraine, Israel, Gaza, and Taiwan:

“What we do has consequences—global and historic.  With this aid, we are helping the millions of Ukrainians on the front lines in their fight against Russian tyranny, providing critical security assistance for Israel, delivering urgent humanitarian aid for those caught in the conflict in Gaza, and supporting Taiwan’s defense against Chinese aggression.  The Washington Postcalled the House approval of the supplemental, ‘The vote heard around the world.’  Today, we made sure our actions here in the Senate also are heard around the world.

“And while I have always said Israel has the right to exist, it has the right to defend itself, and has the right to strike back at Hamas after the atrocities of October 7th, the humanitarian crisis that was unleashed in Gaza is unspeakable, indefensible, and we cannot be party to it.  I will continue to work with the Administration to ensure Israel uses these funds in line with international standards.  We must hold Israel and all recipients of this aid to those standards.

“Now that both the House and Senate have passed this critical supplemental package, I look forward to President Biden signing it into law as soon as possible.”
