Durbin, Burris, Illinois Delegation Call on President to Provide Federal Relief for Five Illinois Counties

[WASHINGTON, DC] – U.S. Senators Dick Durbin (D-IL) and Roland Burris (D-IL) and members of the Illinois Congressional Delegation today have agreed to request that President Obama declare five Illinois counties – Kankakee, LaSalle, Livingston, Peoria and Putnam – federal disaster areas.  Members signing on to the letter include Representatives Melissa Bean (D-IL), Judy Biggert (R-IL), Jerry Costello (D-IL), Danny Davis (D-IL), Bill Foster (D-IL), Luis Gutierrez (D-IL), Debbie Halverson (D-IL), Phil Hare (D-IL), Jesse Jackson, Jr. (D-IL), Tim Johnson (R-IL), Mark Kirk (R-IL), Dan Lipinski (D-IL), Don Manzullo (R-IL), Mike Quigley (D-IL), Peter Roskam (R-IL), Bobby Rush (D-IL), Jan Schakowsky (D-IL), Aaron Schock (R-IL) and John Shimkus (R-IL).

“We write to support Illinois Governor Pat Quinn’s request for a federal disaster declaration for five counties in north central Illinois affected by severe storms and tornadoes,” the Illinois members wrote.  “The Governor has determined that this incident is of such severity and magnitude that effective response is beyond the capabilities of the state and the affected local governments, and that supplementary federal assistance is necessary…We thank you in advance for your timely consideration of this important request and stand ready to assist in any way appropriate.”

The severe storms that produced multiple tornadoes moved from west to east through the state, damaging numerous communities in the disaster areas and causing 17 injuries in LaSalle County and 14 injuries in Livingston County, many requiring hospitalization.   Governor Quinn has already declared these counties state disaster areas.  With a federal disaster declaration, these five counties can receive Individual Assistance which provides assistance to households for rent, repairs, replacement of home and personal goods up to a maximum of $28,800 per household and Hazard Mitigation assistance will be made available statewide.

The Honorable Barack Obama
President of the United States
The White House
Washington, D. C.

Dear Mr. President:

We write to support Illinois Governor Pat Quinn’s request for a federal disaster declaration for five counties in north central Illinois affected by severe storms and tornadoes that occurred on June 5, 2010.  Governor Quinn has already declared these counties state disaster areas.

The high winds associated with the severe storms and tornadoes destroyed or damaged residences, businesses, and other structures in the following five counties:  Kankakee, LaSalle, Livingston, Peoria, and Putnam.   The severe storms that produced multiple tornadoes moved from west to east through the state, damaging numerous communities in the disaster areas.  Fortunately, there were no fatalities.  There were, however, 17 injuries in LaSalle County and 14 injuries in Livingston County, many requiring hospitalization.

The Governor has determined that this incident is of such severity and magnitude that effective response is beyond the capabilities of the state and the affected local governments, and that supplementary Federal assistance is necessary.  Governor Quinn is specifically requesting Individual Assistance programs including the Individuals and Households Program, Disaster Unemployment Assistance, Crisis Counseling and Small Business Administration Disaster Loans for Kankakee, LaSalle, Livingston, Peoria and Putnam counties; and Hazard Mitigation assistance statewide.

We respectfully request that you make the necessary declaration so that people in these five counties can receive the assistance they need to remove debris and repair damage.  We thank you in advance for your timely consideration of this important request and stand ready to assist in any way appropriate.

Sincerely,

Dick Durbin
U.S. Senator
