Durbin, Duckworth Announce $10 Million for Shawneetown Regional Port Revitalization Project

WASHINGTON – U.S. Senate Majority Whip Dick Durbin (D-IL) and U.S. Senator Tammy Duckworth (D-IL) today announced $10,120,000 for the Shawneetown Regional Port Revitalization Project through the U.S. Department of Transportation’s (DOT) Port Infrastructure Development Program (PIDP) to fund the design and construction of a 1.25-mile new port access road to safely accommodate existing and future intermodal truck trips and prepare for future port expansions and operations.

“The Shawneetown Regional Port District is integral to the downstate economy that drives the livelihoods of countless families,” said Durbin.“It has been a linchpin in connecting our region to the global marketplace, facilitating the movement of goods that power our homes, industries, and communities. The upgrades made possible by this federal funding will enable us to meet the demands of the 21st century, making the port more reliable and efficient.”

“Located on the Ohio River, the Shawneetown Regional Port District is a critical link for Southern Illinois in a region that’s too often overlooked,” Duckworth said. “With today’s significant support, this port will have more of the resources it needs to update and develop its property, strengthening the nation’s supply chain, supporting workforce development and expanding the economy in southern Illinois. I was proud to support this project and I’m pleased to see the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law delivering on its promise of improving our crumbling infrastructure in every corner of our nation.”

The Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act, which Durbin and Duckworth supported, appropriated $450 million to the PIDP. An additional $212,203,512 was made available to the program under the Fiscal Year (FY) 2023 Consolidated Appropriations Act, resulting in a total of $662,203,512 in FY23 PIDP grant funding.
