Durbin, Duckworth Announce $2.8 Million to Enhance Performance-Based Compensation for Teachers in Cahokia Heights
WASHINGTON – U.S. Senate Majority Whip Dick Durbin (D-IL) and U.S. Senator Tammy Duckworth (D-IL) today announced $2,800,000 for Cahokia Unit School District 187 through the U.S. Department of Education’s (ED) Teacher Incentive Fund (TIF) to increase teacher and principal effectiveness by creating a performance-based compensation system.
“Our teachers are the unsung heroes of our society, working tirelessly day in and day out to impart knowledge, instill values, and mold the leaders of tomorrow,” said Durbin. “This federal funding not only recognizes their hard work, but also empowers them to continue shaping the future of our nation, one student at a time.
“Teachers are talented and selfless public servants, and their actions can have far-reaching impacts on their students—I know from personal experience the impact a teacher’s kindness can make,” said Duckworth. “This federal support recognizes the hard work of educators in Cahokia Heights, and I’m proud to continue advocating for federal investments for Illinois’s teachers.”
The TIF program supports the use of performance-based compensation to increase students’ access to effective educators in high-need schools, and to expand the array of promising approaches that can help these educators and other school staff succeed. Performance-based compensation systems must consider gains in student academic achievement and classroom evaluations, as well as provide educators with incentives to take on additional responsibilities and leadership roles.
