Durbin, Duckworth Send Recommendations to be Federal District Court Judge in the Northern District of Illinois Eastern Division to the White House
WASHINGTON – U.S. Senate Majority Whip Dick Durbin (D-IL), Chair of the Senate Judiciary Committee, and U.S. Senator Tammy Duckworth (D-IL) today sent a list of names for the White House to consider for Federal District Court Judge vacancies in the Northern District of Illinois Eastern Division. Based on recommendations made by the screening committee the Senators established, Durbin and Duckworth have forwarded the names of the following individuals to President Biden for consideration: Georgia Alexakis, Karyn L. Bass Ehler, Judge Sunil Harjani, Judge Heather McShain, Amol Parikh, and Grayson Sang Walker.
“We appreciate the opportunity to provide assistance and input in filling these vacancies, and we look forward to working with you to ensure a fair and swift confirmation process after you submit nominations to the Senate,” Durbin and Duckworth wrote in a letter to President Biden.
In August, Durbin and Duckworth established a screening committee to review applicants to be a Federal District Court Judge in the Northern District of Illinois Eastern Division. Their screening committee is chaired by the Honorable David Coar (ret.), former U.S. District Court Judge for the Northern District of Illinois. The other members of the Northern District Committee are Alejandro Caffarelli, Michael Chu, Kevin Conway, Herschella Conyers, Edward Feldman, Betty Jang, Monica Llorente, Laurie Mikva, Zaldwaynaka (“Z”) Scott, and Carlina Tapia-Ruano.
The committee has carefully evaluated candidates by reviewing their professional records and application questionnaires, contacting references, and conducting interviews, and has submitted their findings and recommendations to the Senators. Durbin and Duckworth have interviewed the finalists, reviewed their records, and consulted with each other regarding their qualifications.
Once the President submits a nomination to the U.S. Senate, it will be reviewed by the Senate Judiciary Committee, of which Durbin is the Chair, and the nominee will ultimately receive a vote in the Committee. If the nomination is approved by the Judiciary Committee, the nominee will receive a vote by the full Senate.
