Durbin Helps Break Ground at New Multimodal Transportation Center in Normal

[NORMAL, IL] – Senator Dick Durbin (D-IL) celebrated the groundbreaking today for a new multimodal transportation center in Upper Normal. More than 70 percent of the project was funded with federal dollars, including more than $10.6 million Durbin secured through his position on the Senate Appropriations Committee.

“With the construction of this multi-modal center, funded to completion by a $22 million grant through the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act, Normal is poised to become a showcase community for the potential of high-speed rail in America. This project will create hundreds of jobs in the region and generate millions of dollars in economic activity benefiting the local community. The center will serve as a transportation hub in the heart of Illinois, connecting major cities in the area with schools and businesses across the Midwest,” said Durbin.

Durbin has championed the multimodal project since 2003, securing $10,664,500 in federal funding over six fiscal years through his position on the Senate Appropriations Committee.
