Durbin Honors Three Illinoisans Killed in Attack in Afghanistan Hospital
[WASHINGTON, D.C.] - U.S. Senator Dick Durbin (D-IL) spoke on the Senate Floor today in remembrance of Dr. Jerry Umanos, John Gabel, and Gary Gabel of Illinois. The three men were killed in the attack at the Cure International Hospital in Kabul, Afghanistan late last week. The 100-bed American-run charity facility specializes in the treatment of disabled children and women’s health issues.
“Sadly on April 24 we lost three Americans from my home state of Illinois who were killed at the Cure International Hospital, which focuses on maternity and pediatric care. Dr. Umanos, John Gabel and his father Gary Gabel,” Durbin said. “Both John Gabel and Dr. Umanos were working to help the Afghan people receive health care. In a country still coping with the legacy of decades of terrible conflict that devastated the medical infrastructure of Afghanistan, they were helping address the real health needs of the Afghan people and improving the lives of those they assisted.”
