Durbin Introduces Bill To Rename Will County Post Office In Honor Of Larry Walsh Sr.

WASHINGTON – U.S. Senator Dick Durbin (D-IL) today introduced legislation to rename the U.S. Post Office facility located at 303 E. Mississippi Ave. in Elwood, Illinois, after former Will County Executive Lawrence M. “Larry” Walsh Sr.

Walsh, who passed away at the age of 72 on June 3, 2020, after a brave fight with prostate cancer, began his career in public service at the age of 21. For the next 50 years, Walsh served on the school board, in the Illinois State Senate, and as Will County executive.

“Larry devoted 50 years of his life to serving ‘the folks back home,’ as he always called his constituents. He was a bridge-builder, who had seemingly inexhaustible patience when it came to searching for common ground in order to make government work for the people. He continues to be a shining example of what public service should look like,” said Durbin. “I’m proud to honor his years of service by introducing legislation to rename the post office in his hometown in commemoration of his years of service to this community.”

Last month, Durbin honored Walsh’s public service with a speech on the Senator floor.

U.S. Representative Bill Foster (D-IL-11) introduced the companion bill in the House of Representatives.
