Durbin Meets with CDC Director Cohen

WASHINGTON – U.S. Senate Majority Whip Dick Durbin (D-IL) today met with Dr. Mandy Cohen, the Director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), to discuss several issues important to the public health and safety of children.  During the meeting, Durbin discussed the need to curb gun violence and the trauma that children face as a result, and the scarcity of access to pediatric dentistry services.  They also discussed issues important to Illinois such as the ongoing flooding in Cahokia Heights, Illinois, and how prolonged exposure to floodwater and sewage can pose significant health concerns.

“Americans rely on the CDC’s scientific expertise to safeguard our health.  During today’s meeting with Director Cohen, we discussed several priorities to promote public health and safety, particularly among our children,” said Durbin.  “Some of these priorities include addressing Big Tobacco’s efforts to addict children to nicotine; gun violence in our communities, now the leading cause of death among our youth; and youth oral health, which is in dire need of attention.  We also discussed the ongoing flooding in Cahokia Heights, and ways Congress can work with CDC to ensure residents get the answers they deserve.”
