Durbin: Peoria International Airport to Receive $1.8 Million Grant For Improvements

[WASHINGTON, DC] – Assistant Senate Majority Leader Dick Durbin (D-IL) announced today that the Department of Transportation (DOT) has awarded a $1,800,000 grant to General Wayne A. Downing Peoria International Airport. This funding will be used for the construction of a new power vault building to improve and modernize airfield lighting systems.

“Today’s funding will give Peoria International Airport more resources to continue an important modernization project that will help the airport better serve central Illinoisans,” said Durbin.

Peoria International Airport is a public airport southwest of Peoria that provides non-stop commercial air service to various locations. This funding will allow the airport to move airfield lighting electrical circuits from the 50-year old terminal building into a new facility, a necessary step for future development. A new terminal building is being built at the airport, and the old terminal is expected to be demolished. Durbin secured $950,000 in FY2009 for the terminal construction project, and the airport received a $6.3 million grant through the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act.
