Durbin: Recovery Act Funding Will Put 50 More Cops on the Beat in Chicago
$25 million in funding for Illinois will allow for the hiring of 106 new officers
[WASHINGTON, D.C.] – Assistant Senate Majority Leader Dick Durbin (D-IL) today announced that Illinois law enforcement agencies will receive a total of $25,867,708 in Recovery Act funding under the Department of Justice Office of Community Oriented Policing Services (COPS), COPS Hiring Recovery Program (CHRP). Today’s funding will be used to hire or rehire 106 new police officers in Illinois – 50 of which will be in Chicago.
“At a time when tight budgets have forced many law enforcement agencies to reduce the number of officers on duty, today’s funding will help create jobs and increase security in communities that need it the most,” said Durbin. “Putting more cops on the beat will help make our neighborhoods safer.”
Today’s funding is part of the Justice Department’s announcement of $1 billion in COPS grants to 1,046 law enforcement agencies nationwide for the hiring or rehiring of 4,699 law enforcement officers.
