Durbin Statement After Attending Late Pope Francis' Funeral

ROME – U.S. Senate Democratic Whip Dick Durbin (D-IL) released the following statement after attending the late Pope Francis’ funeral at the Vatican City today. The bipartisan Senate delegation was led by Durbin and U.S. Senator Susan Collins (R-ME). Senators Ed Markey (D-MA), Mike Rounds (R-SD), and Eric Schmitt (R-MO) also attended.

Durbin said, “It was a great honor to pay my respects to the late Pope Francis in St. Peter’s Square today, along with so many others from around the world who loved and admired His Holiness. We must continue to hold fast to the message of Pope Francis to love and respect one another. In a world of hate and fear, Pope Francis’ message of peace and understanding is needed now more than ever.”

Durbin also attended the funeral mass of Pope John Paul II in 2005.
