Durbin Statement On Senate Republicans Voting Against The Tax Relief For American Families And Workers Act

WASHINGTON – U.S. Senate Majority Whip Dick Durbin (D-IL) today released the following statement after Senate Republicans voted against the Tax Relief for American Families and Workers Act of 2024.  The bill expands the Child Tax Credit (CTC), restores certain business tax breaks that help small businesses, and increases subsidies for affordable housing and disaster assistance.  Earlier this year, this legislation passed the House of Representatives on a large bipartisan basis, 357-70.

“As costs have risen, wages haven’t kept up.  We need to give workers and families more tools to help make ends meet.  The Tax Relief for American Families and Workers Act would provide instant financial support to millions of Americans and lift hundreds of thousands of children out of poverty, making our tax system fairer for everyday workers and families.  Unfortunately, my Republican colleagues refused to pass this bill to help American families.  With today’s vote, we’re proving once again that Democrats are the party of family values.”

According to Center on Budget and Policy Priorities (CBPP), 16 million children, including 587,000 in Illinois, would see the increased benefits of the expanded CTC in the next few months, including at least six million children who would receive at least $1,000 more from the CTC.  Further, in the first year, 400,000 children would be lifted out of poverty, with an additional 100,000 lifted out of poverty once the expanded credit is fully in effect thanks to the Tax Relief for American Families and Workers Act of 2024
