Durbin Statement on the Bernanke Nomination
[WASHINGTON, D.C.] – Assistant Senate
Majority Leader Dick Durbin (D-IL) released the following statement
today on the nomination of Ben Bernanke to serve a second term as
Chairman of the Federal Reserve.
“I will vote to confirm Ben Bernanke to continue to serve as Chairman of the Federal Reserve.”
“I
saw Ben Bernanke under fire, facing our nation’s most serious economic
crisis since the Great Depression. We need his steady hand as we build
our economy and create new jobs across America.”
“But
as I meet with Chairman Bernanke before the vote, I will continue to
demand that the Federal Reserve make a commitment to transparency and
accountability in its policies. And I will make it clear that if the
Federal Reserve refuses to exercise its authority to demand bank reform
and protect America’s consumers, I will join with members of Congress
to push for new laws that achieve those goals.”
Durbin plans to meet with Bernanke this week, in advance of a Senate vote to confirm his nomination.
