Durbin Statement on the Resignation of U.S. Attorney Patrick Fitzgerald

[WASHINGTON, D.C.] - U.S. Senator Dick Durbin (D-IL) released the following statement today after Patrick Fitzgerald, U.S. Attorney for the Northern District of Illinois, announced his resignation:

“When I first interviewed Patrick Fitzgerald for U.S. Attorney for the Northern District of Illinois, he gave me his word that he would not show any political favoritism in his professional duties. He kept his word.”

“His aggressive prosecution of wrongdoing - including politicians in both parties - has given fair warning that no one is above the law.”

“Our nation is fortunate to have public servants of Patrick Fitzgerald’s caliber and integrity.”

Senator Durbin supported Patrick Fitzgerald’s nomination to be U.S. Attorney for the Northern District of Illinois in 2001 and urged President Obama to reappoint him to that position in 2009.
