Durbin, Warnock Statement on Federal District Court Striking Down Alabama Republicans' Congressional Map Again
Durbin, Warnock: “Bad faith actors in Alabama and across the country have shown that they are dead set on making it more difficult for Americans to vote.”
WASHINGTON – U.S. Senate Majority Whip Dick Durbin (D-IL), Chair of the Senate Judiciary Committee, and U.S. Senator Reverend Raphael Warnock (D-GA) released the following statement after a three-judge federal district court panel struck down Alabama Republicans’ latest attempt at a redrawn congressional map for violating federal civil rights law and diluting the power of Black voters:
“After the Supreme Court struck down their proposed Congressional map earlier this summer, Alabama Republicans chose to defy the Court and double down on discriminatory districts. We’re pleased to see that independent, court-appointed experts have been assigned to propose maps that include a second majority-Black district as ordered.
“Bad faith actors in Alabama and across the country have shown that they are dead set on making it more difficult for Americans to vote. While today’s ruling is a short-term victory, we will continue our work to reintroduce the John R. Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act to fully restore the Voting Rights Act and safeguard the fundamental right to participate in our democracy.”
In June, Durbin and Warnock applauded the Supreme Court ruling in Allen v. Milligan, which held that Alabama had diluted the power of Black voters and violated the Voting Rights Act by drawing a congressional voting map with a single district in which Black voters made up a majority.
